A leaking pool float can quickly deflate a fantastic pool day. But you can redeem the moment—and the pool toy—with a swift patch-up. Follow these four instructions to mend punctured inflatables:

1. Use the Proper Repair Kit

Your raft, inflatable ring, or any other pool toy might include its own patch-up kit, which is ideal for situations like these. If not, you’ll need to buy a pool float repair kit.

First, identify whether your pool toy is made from plastic, vinyl, or rubber. Patches designed for rubber won’t stick well to vinyl, and vice versa. If you’re unsure about the material, check the manufacturer’s website or contact their customer support.

2. Locate the Leak

You might spot the leak while still in the water. If your float is somewhat inflated, submerge it one section at a time. Gently squeeze and watch for escaping bubbles. Use duct or electrical tape to mark the hole for future reference.

3. Ready the Area

Ensure the area around the puncture is thoroughly dry before attempting your repair, as dirt or sunscreen could compromise the patch. Use the cleaning solution from your repair kit or apply rubbing alcohol with a soft cloth to clean the surface. Let the entire float dry, focusing on an area several inches around the damaged spot. Place the pool float on a clean, flat area and smooth out the section you’ll be fixing as much as possible.

4. Fix the Leak

Adhere to the guidelines included with the repair kit to mend the breach in your inflatable pool float. For optimal results, ensure to align the patch as accurately as you can over the hole. Allow the recommended duration (usually around thirty minutes) for the patch to set before re-inflating the float.

Alternatively, waterproof adhesives can be applied to fix pool inflatables. Confirm that the adhesive suits the material type you’re working on, and adhere to the previously mentioned preparation steps. Apply the adhesive in a consistent line over the hole, spreading it evenly at least a half inch in all directions, and let it set for the suggested time before inflating again.

Conduct the water test once more. If there are no additional air bubbles emerging, your patch is secure, and your inflatable is prepared for more pool fun!
