Situated between West 48th and 51st streets at Rockefeller Plaza, the 87th annual Rockefeller Center tree stands proudly. Commencing as a yearly custom in 1931, this iconic tree symbolized hope during the dark days of the Great Depression.

The inaugural tree at the site, a 20-foot balsam fir, was set up and adorned by construction workers at what is now Rockefeller Plaza. Their families crafted garlands for the tree, initiating the beloved tradition.

Years down the line, the tree endures as an emblem of hope and unity, with countless visitors coming post-9/11 to witness its patriotic red, white, and blue decorations. Annually, around 125 million individuals make a visit to this must-see Christmas icon in New York.

How Tall is the Rockefeller Tree?

In 2019, the tree reached an astounding height of 77 feet (think of all the Christmas baubles it could hold!). The tree was donated by a woman who, in an interview, shared that she planted the four-foot Norway spruce in 1959, unsure if it would thrive after growing it in a pot on her coffee table. She expressed joy at sharing it with everyone, exemplifying the Christmas spirit.

How Many Lights Adorn the Rockefeller Tree?

A staggering 50,000! This year’s tree will boast five miles of colored lights. The centerpiece wouldn’t be complete without its renowned Swarovski star topper, spanning over nine feet and encrusted with more than 3 million Swarovski crystals, illuminated with LED lights.

The star, drawing inspiration from the allure of starlight, is designed to “radiate meaning and mystery into the world,” as noted by designer Daniel Libeskind. The Swarovski star topper provides a magical finish to one of the world’s most splendid trees.

How Long is the Rockefeller Tree Displayed?

Two significant events mark the holiday season for the Rockefeller Tree. Saturday, November 9th around 7:30 am, saw the tree erected at center plaza. The annual tree lighting occurred on Wednesday, December 4th and will stay illuminated throughout Christmas Day. The tree is disassembled on Friday, January 17th, 2020.

Interesting Highlight: Once set up, the Rockefeller tree doesn’t require watering! The cold, sometimes freezing weather outside (unlike the warm indoors) ensures it doesn’t dry out!

What Happens to the Rockefeller Tree After the Holidays?

Exemplifying charity and generosity, the Rockefeller tree has been donated to Habitat for Humanity for thirteen consecutive years. It is milled into lumber to help construct homes, with assistance from Rockefeller Center staff. This practice began in 2007 when volunteers assisted in building for families affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Lumber from previous years has been used to build homes in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia, and Mississippi.

And remember, the Rockefeller tree isn’t the only one that can be donated! Whether your tree is real or artificial, you can donate it after the holiday season! Organizations like the Salvation Army welcome your artificial tree, and habitat sanctuaries or restoration projects could use your real tree!

The Rockefeller Tree: A Continuous Gift

At the heart of New York City’s holiday tradition, the celebration of the Rockefeller tree is something to behold. Each year, a live telecast allows everyone to partake in this event. No tickets are needed to attend the ceremony in person, ensuring everyone can enjoy the enchantment of this Christmas custom.

The 2019 lighting event featured performances by stars such as John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Derek and Julianne Hough, Idina Menzel, Lea Michele, NE-YO, and the Radio City Rockettes.

Beyond the glitz and glamour of the festivities, the tree represents a profound lesson in giving. Displayed freely for everyone to appreciate during the holidays, it is eventually donated to Habitat for Humanity, aiding those in need with shelter. With its awe-inspiring beauty, the Rockefeller tree encourages us to pause, reflect, and be grateful for the blessings around us.
