Waffles aren’t just for Christmas mornings; they can be savored all year round. However, there’s a specific day when Swedes indulge in these delectable goodies – March 25th, known as Waffle Day!
The team at VonChef reached out to me to help spread the word about this special Swedish custom, so they provided me with a waffle iron.
This week, my daughter and I made a small batch of waffles one morning, and it was incredibly simple. I’ll recount our waffle-making experience while sharing more about Waffle Day – and ways you can join in the festivities!
Understanding Waffle Day: The Story Behind It
When waffles are mentioned, another nation might pop into your head; after all, Belgium celebrates waffles every day. To grasp why Sweden observes Waffle Day on March 25th, it’s crucial to know that the Christian holiday ‘Feast of the Annunciation,’ also called Lady Day, falls on this date. In Swedish, this is called Vårfrudagen, which amusingly resembles Våffeldagen, meaning Waffle Day in Swedish. This feast heralds the onset of spring (just days after the Equinox), and part of the celebration includes – you guessed it, devouring waffles.
Ways to Enjoy Waffle Day
It’s quite straightforward, really. Just consume waffles! If you’re in Sweden, you’ll probably find this treat abundantly available in cafes and eateries on this occasion. But you don’t have to step out – just whip them up at home! The Visit Sweden tourism website even offers a traditional recipe if you’re after something authentic. They also note that waffles are particularly popular as Christmas approaches.
Creating Your Waffles
So, let’s get started. On our Waffle morning, my daughter assisted in mixing up a batch of almond-flour waffles.
Combine Your Ingredients
Butter or Spray the Surface and Pour the Batter
Close the lid and let them cook. Since I have a rotating waffle iron, after a minute or two, we flip it for even cooking (and it helps pass the time).
It takes about 7 minutes for waffles to turn golden brown.
Add your favorite topping. Lydia loves to put honey in every single square!
Enjoy the best part – eating!
If you decide to make your own waffles, please share your photos on the All Things Christmas Facebook Group, I would love to see your creations!
