Ever wondered, “What’s the reason behind adorning a tree with ornaments?” Embark on a journey through history to uncover this tradition.

Imagine Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, during the 16th century, walking through a snowy evening after contemplating a sermon. The luminous moonlight and freshly fallen snow created a scene where the snow-covered tree branches shimmered like stars in the night sky.

Captivated by the breathtaking beauty of nature, Martin sought to bring this splendor into his home. Thus, he envisioned placing lit candles on his tree. The Luther family’s tree, adorned with candles emitting flickering light, mimicked the glowing snowy landscape and brilliantly illuminated the tree’s decorations.

Paper flowers, cookies, fruits, and nuts were used to adorn Christmas trees, symbolizing the forthcoming renewal of life and spring. To add vibrancy and vitality, trees were also embellished with paper streamers, popcorn, and cranberries.

To truly grasp the tradition of decorating Christmas trees, we must journey even further back to the year 723. Saint Boniface was on an evangelical mission through Germany when he encountered a pagan ritual. Participants were dancing around a festively adorned oak tree, preparing to sacrifice an infant in Thor’s honor.

Horrified, Boniface felled the oak tree with a single axe swing in the name of Jesus Christ. In its place, a small fir tree stood. Boniface explained that the fir tree represents the true God; its evergreen leaves symbolize eternal life, and its upward-pointing needles signify heaven. According to tradition, from then onwards, fir trees were brought into Christian homes and decorated in honor of Jesus Christ’s birth. Hanging religious ornaments became a way to celebrate the true essence of Christmas.
