Just when your family was starting to get over the sugar rush from cookies, Valentine’s Day brought another wave of sugary treats. Now, with Easter right around the corner, the possibility of more sweets looms over the next several days to weeks for your children. Although candy is typically associated with Easter, it doesn’t have to overshadow every event. For instance, Easter Egg Hunts focus on the eggs themselves, don’t they? So why fill them with even more sugary treats?

If you’re on the lookout for non-candy Easter egg options, here are some sugar-free alternatives that won’t contribute to a sugar overload.

Hide Real Eggs

Whenever possible, use real decorated eggs for your egg hunt. Kids will be over the moon knowing that the Easter Bunny hid the eggs they took time to decorate! However, keep in mind two important tips:

  1. Boiled eggs can spoil quickly depending on the temperature. The CDC advises that boiled eggs shouldn’t be left out of the refrigerator for more than two hours; discard them after one hour if the temperature exceeds 90 degrees.
  2. Rotten eggs smell awful. Really terrible. If you decide to hide your decorated boiled eggs, make a note of all your hiding spots and check them after the hunt. This will help avoid any unpleasant surprises—or odors—later on.

Play Along

What offers long-lasting enjoyment akin to candy and is equally entertaining? Toys! For a wonderful non-candy egg filler, visit your local party supply or dollar store and collect small goodies. Items that fit inside a plastic Easter egg can include toy cars, finger puppets, miniature dinosaurs and other animals, plastic jewelry, army men, colorful erasers, temporary tattoos, and more. When preparing for toddlers, remember that small items can be a choking hazard. In such cases, a soft bunny or stuffed animal prize at the end of the hunt is a perfect substitute.

Change it Up

Many families opt to place spare change inside Easter eggs for kids to discover. This can range from a penny to a quarter to even a dollar bill. For an added twist, hide something your kids may not have seen before – gold dollar coins. What child wouldn’t be thrilled to find some “treasure” inside their Easter eggs!

Healthy Snacks

If you’re looking to give your child an edible surprise for Easter, there are plenty of options that don’t involve candy. Easter eggs can hold various small snacks including raisins, popcorn, cereal, small crackers, baby carrots, or fresh berries. Just place the snacks in a small baggie (to avoid messes), then put them inside the egg and you’re good to go.

Golden Ticket

Fillable coupons are another creative non-candy Easter Egg filler. Put handmade vouchers inside Easter eggs for your children’s favorite activities such as a trip to a park, playground, zoo, the movies, or dining at their favorite restaurant. This provides more lasting joy than candy by offering fun family outings to look forward to.

Non-candy Easter Egg Hunt prizes are indeed a possibility! With a bit of imagination, your kids can enjoy this beloved holiday tradition without the sugar spike.
