How to Anchor Your Christmas Inflatables Against Wind
Oct 27th 2023
Embellishing your home for Christmas is a major highlight of the festive season. At least four in 10 homeowners string up Christmas lights, hang a wreath on the front door, or place a Santa figure on the lawn.
Outdoor Christmas decorations beautifully enhance your home’s holiday aesthetic, but harsh winter conditions necessitate safeguarding them. Inflatable Christmas ornaments are especially vulnerable to damage from wind, ice, and snow.
You invest a lot in your Christmas lawn decorations. Don’t allow a few strong winds to carry them away. Securely fastening your inflatable Christmas decor provides peace of mind, knowing your investment will likely endure adverse weather conditions.
Follow these tips to maintain your light lawn decorations and inflatables throughout the season.
Select the Optimal Location
Since wind poses the greatest threat to inflatable decorations, try to avoid exposing them. It’s wiser to position Christmas inflatables on level ground (avoiding hills or slopes) in a sheltered area. If feasible, place your inflatable near walls or shrubs to serve as windbreakers. A nearby large object, like a fence or pole, can also help anchor your decorations.
Anchor Them with Stakes
Ground stakes are an effective method to anchor a Christmas inflatable. Many inflatables come with tether lines and stakes, but you can purchase additional stakes for extra security. Drive the stakes into the ground as deeply as possible and use the tether lines to secure the inflatable.
If your inflatable decoration lacks a grommet or D-ring for attaching a safety line, you can use twine or light rope. Inflate the ornament, loop the rope around the middle, and tie it to the ground stakes. Ensure the rope is not overly tight to avoid distorting the decoration or obstructing airflow.
Add Weights
Another method to secure large Christmas lawn decorations is by weighing them down with sand or gravel bags. Simply tie the bag to the inflatable using the tether line or additional rope. Anchor your inflatable at multiple points to keep it stable in strong winds.
Tie Them Securely
As an alternative to stakes or weights, secure your inflatable decoration by tying it to another sturdy object, like a fence post, porch railing, or tree. While inflating, loop twine or thin rope around the middle of the yard decoration. Wrap the rope fully around the inflatable at least once, taking care not to restrict airflow. Then, attach it to a nearby object.
Additional Security
Wind isn’t the sole adversary for your outdoor Christmas decorations. Regrettably, large Christmas inflatables can be attractive targets for thieves. To deter theft, fasten your decorations to a secure object like a porch rail or light pole with a bicycle lock or chain.
For enhanced security, place your Christmas yard decorations close to your house, near motion-sensor lights, and outdoor security cameras.
Inflatable decorations make a wonderful addition to your outdoor Christmas decor. Protecting your inflatables from harsh winter elements will ensure they bring joy to your yard year after year.
