6 Techniques for Preserving Your Pumpkins
Oct 17th 2022
Pumpkin carving is a beloved Halloween activity. Nonetheless, a carved pumpkin deteriorates rapidly. Unless a decayed and moldy jack-o’-lantern fits your Halloween aesthetic, read these suggestions on how to maintain a carved pumpkin.
1. Bleach
Bleach is a potent method to extend a pumpkin’s freshness. You’ll need: A bucket big enough for submerging your jack-o’-lantern, household bleach, a measuring spoon, and protective gloves. Thoroughly rinse your pumpkin after carving. Fill your bucket and mix in two to three teaspoons of bleach per gallon of water. Put on protective gloves and immerse your pumpkin in the solution. You’ll need to keep it submerged as it will float. Soak for 20 minutes, then remove and let it air dry on paper towels.
2. Peppermint Spray
Seeking a natural, eco-friendly alternative? Some pumpkin carving aficionados recommend peppermint spray, as peppermint oil is a natural antifungal.
Mix a tablespoon of peppermint dish soap or peppermint essential oil with a quart of water. Transfer the mixture to a clean spray bottle and lightly mist the inside of the carved pumpkin.
3. Hairspray
Here’s a simple option: hairspray. Spray your pumpkin inside and out to help it stay fresh. HOWEVER, remember that hairspray is flammable! Do not use a candle to illuminate a pumpkin treated with hairspray.
4. Olive Oil
Most natural oils – including avocado, sesame, olive, tea tree, almond, and grapefruit seed extract – lock in moisture to prevent your pumpkin from drying out. Using disposable gloves, generously apply oil to the exterior and exposed cut-out sections. If you intend to light your jack-o’-lantern with candles, avoid placing oil inside the pumpkin. Reapply as needed over time. This method is also great for kids to assist with (as long as they wear aprons), and your pumpkin will be safe for wildlife to consume post-Halloween!
5. Petroleum Jelly
Like vegetable oil, petroleum jelly creates an effective barrier against bacteria on your carved pumpkin. Use the jelly to coat your pumpkin inside and out. Since petroleum jelly can be messy, use disposable gloves for easy application and cleanup.
6. Floor Wax
If you decide not to carve your pumpkin, using floor wax can help preserve it. Simply apply the wax to the pumpkin for a shiny appearance and longer lifespan.
Advice
These techniques work best on fresh pumpkins without bruises, scrapes, or soft spots. Carved pumpkins should be well-scraped inside and cleaned and dried as much as possible.
Delay carving your pumpkin until necessary (a few days before Halloween is optimal) and avoid placing jack-o’-lanterns in direct sunlight, heavy rain, or extremely warm or freezing weather.
Note that some of these methods are not suitable for use with a candle flame. Flameless candles offer a safe and affordable alternative.
